What is specialized freight shipping?
Specialized freight is everything that does not fit a standard trailer or a standard process: over-dimensional and heavy-haul loads that break the legal envelope, high-value and fragile cargo that cannot be treated like a pallet, and multi-piece project freight that has to land in sequence. Think turbines, transformers, excavators, pressure vessels, and manufactured structures.
The work is not the driving, it is the engineering around it. A specialized move is a plan: the right equipment for the load’s height and weight, a permit from every state DOT on the route, a survey of every bridge and wire in the way, pilot cars or police where the width demands them, and a delivery sequenced to the crane schedule. Heavy-haul starts with one question: how far past legal is the load? The federal legal envelope is 8 feet 6 inches wide, about 13 feet 6 inches tall, and 80,000 pounds. Cross any line and you are into permits, escorts, and route surveys, and the further past it goes, the more engineering the move takes.

The Permit That Wasn’t.
A missing or wrong state permit strands a load at a scale house or a state line, burning days and demurrage while the clock runs. We pull permits for every state on the route before the wheels turn, route survey attached, so the load clears every checkpoint it meets.
The Bridge That Didn’t Clear.
An unsurveyed overpass, a low wire, or a turn too tight stops an over-height or over-width load cold, sometimes with no way forward and no way back. We survey the route foot by foot, flag every restriction, and engineer around it before a truck is ever dispatched.

Specialized freight is any shipment that falls outside standard van, flatbed, or LTL handling because of its size, weight, value, or complexity. It covers over-dimensional and heavy-haul loads that need permits and escorts, high-value or fragile cargo that needs enhanced security and handling, and project freight where multiple pieces are sequenced to an install plan. The common thread is that off-the-shelf execution is not enough: every move is engineered around the cargo, from equipment selection to permits, route survey, escorts, and delivery sequencing.
A load is oversize, and needs a state permit, the moment it exceeds the legal envelope on any axis. The federal legal width is 8 feet 6 inches (102 inches) in every state, legal height runs 13 feet 6 inches in most eastern states up to 14 feet or 14 feet 6 inches across much of the West, and legal gross weight on the Interstate is 80,000 pounds. Cross any of those and you need an oversize or overweight permit for each state on the route. AFX classifies your load and pulls every permit in-house.
As a working baseline: 8 feet 6 inches wide, 13 feet 6 inches tall, roughly 53 feet of trailer length, and 80,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. Width is the one constant, 102 inches in every state, while height, length, and weight limits vary state to state. Anything beyond these is permitted freight, and the further past the line it goes the more escorts, route surveys, and engineering the move requires.
It depends on the state, but as a general rule a load wider than about 12 feet needs at least one pilot car, and wider than about 14 feet usually needs two, one in front and one behind. Over-height loads beyond roughly 14 feet 6 inches need a high-pole escort to check clearances, and long loads often need a rear escort. The exact triggers differ in every state, which is why AFX maps the escort plan for the whole route rather than one state at a time.
A superload is an oversize load large or heavy enough to need special engineering beyond a standard oversize permit. Width beyond about 16 feet is a common superload trigger, along with extreme height, lengths past roughly 120 feet, or very heavy gross weights, with the exact thresholds set by each state. Superloads typically require a route survey, structural review of bridges, utility and traffic-signal coordination, police escorts, and weeks of lead time. AFX manages the full superload process end to end.
They are a ladder of deck heights. A flatbed has a deck about 5 feet off the ground and carries cargo that clears legal height on its own. A step-deck, or drop deck, sits lower, around 3 feet 5 inches, for loads too tall for a flatbed. An RGN (removable gooseneck) and a lowboy sit lowest, around 18 to 24 inches, so tall or heavy machinery can be driven or rolled on and still clear bridges. Multi-axle and extendable trailers add capacity and length for the heaviest and longest loads.
A route survey is a physical and engineering review of the planned route to confirm an over-dimensional load can actually make it: bridge heights and weight ratings, overhead wires, sign structures, turn radii, grades, and construction. It is required for superloads and for most over-height or extra-wide moves, and many states mandate it before they issue a permit. AFX runs the survey before dispatch so a clearance problem is found on paper, not at a low overpass.
Every specialized move is quoted individually, because the cost is built from the specific load and route: the equipment required, the number of state permits, pilot cars or police escorts, any route survey or engineering, deadhead to position the trailer, and the complexity of loading and offloading.
