Small Parcel.
Every Box, Priced Right.
Boxes under 150 pounds move fastest through parcel networks, but only if someone checks the dim weight, dodges the surcharges, and knows when to palletize. We do all three, rate-shop every carrier, and track each piece to the door.

What is small parcel shipping?
Small parcel shipping moves individually boxed items, generally under about 150 pounds each, through the high-density parcel networks the major carriers run for speed and scale. Instead of a truckload or a pallet on a freight line, each piece travels with its own label and tracking number, scanned through a hub-and-spoke network from your dock to your customer’s door.
The catch is the pricing. Parcel is billed on the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight, plus a stack of accessorial fees that depend on the box’s size, the address, and the season. Get the packaging and the service level right and parcel is the fastest, cheapest way to move a single box. Get them wrong and you overpay on every order. AFX Logistics rate-shops the carriers, checks the dim math before the label prints, and flags the moment your volume should move to LTL freight instead.
Small parcel is the right call when:
- ✓Individual boxes and items under about 150 lbs each
- ✓Low piece counts that do not justify building a pallet
- ✓E-commerce orders, samples, and replacement parts
- ✓Documents and small B2B deliveries that need a tracking number
- ✓Shipments where speed and per-piece visibility matter most
Your box has a number. The carrier already knows it.
Parcel carriers do not bill what your package weighs. They bill the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight, the space the box takes up, then layer on surcharges the moment a dimension crosses a line, so a big, light carton can bill at four times its real weight. Drop in your dimensions and weight, and the calculator runs the exact carrier math, rounds the way they round, and tells you the billable weight, whether you are paying for air, and which surcharges your box trips before you ever print a label.

Three Ways Parcel Quietly Overcharges
Parcel rarely fails to deliver. It fails to deliver value, and almost always in the same three places. We built the process around all three.
The Air You Pay For.
Parcel carriers bill the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight, the space the box takes up. A big light carton gets billed like a brick. Most shippers never check the dim math, so they pay for air on every order. Our rating engine flags it before the label prints, not after the invoice lands.
The Surcharge Stack.
The base rate is the smallest line on a parcel invoice. Additional handling, large-package, residential, fuel, and peak-season fees stack on top and quietly double the cost. We pre-check every package against the dimension and weight thresholds that trigger them, so the surcharges do not ambush you.
The Pallet You Should Have Built.
Past a handful of boxes or a few hundred pounds, parcel quietly loses to a pallet. Carriers love it when you keep paying per piece. We watch the crossover on your volume and tell you the moment LTL or a sprinter van beats parcel on cost per pound, then quote that move too.

Parcel, Pallet, or Dedicated?
Three ways to move small freight. Here is where each one wins, honestly.
| Criteria | Small Parcel | LTL Freight | Expedited Sprinter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Single boxes under ~150 lbs | 1 to 6 pallets | Time-critical small freight |
| Priced on | Billable weight, zone, service | Freight class, weight, distance | Distance, speed, vehicle size |
| Speed | Ground to next-day air | 1 to 5 business days | Same day to next day, direct |
| Handling | Hub-and-spoke parcel network | Terminal to terminal | One vehicle, dock to dock |
| Tracking | Per piece, door to door | Per shipment (PRO number) | Live, dedicated driver |
| Crossover point | Cheap until it palletizes | Wins at pallet volume | Wins when the clock rules |
Not sure where your shipment lands? Run the dimensions through the calculator above, or compare LTL and expedited for everything past a single box.
How Fast Does Small Parcel Move?
Ground parcel prices and delivers by zone, the band that grows with distance. Closer zones cost less and arrive sooner; air service compresses any of them to a day or two.
On a deadline? Expedited air and sprinter service compresses any zone to same-day or next-day, direct to the door.
Small Boxes.
Serious Savings.
Anyone can print a parcel label. Knowing the dim math, dodging the surcharges, and calling the crossover to freight is where the money is. We do that work on every shipment, then track it to the door.

Small parcel shipping moves individually packaged items, generally under about 150 pounds per piece, through high-density carrier parcel networks built for speed and scale rather than through freight equipment. Pricing is driven by billable weight, the destination zone, and the service level you choose, from ground to next-day air. It is the right mode for single boxes, e-commerce orders, samples, and replacement parts. Once a shipment grows into multiple boxes that could palletize, LTL freight usually wins on cost per pound, and AFX flags that crossover for you.
Dimensional weight, or DIM weight, is a pricing weight based on the space a package occupies instead of how much it actually weighs. For domestic UPS and FedEx, you multiply length by width by height in inches and divide by the DIM divisor of 139. As of August 2025 each dimension is first rounded up to the next whole inch, then the result is rounded up to the next pound. Carriers bill the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight, so a large, light box is billed on the space it takes up.
Because it was billed on dimensional weight, not actual weight. When a box is large but light, the dimensional weight, length times width times height divided by 139, comes out higher than what the scale reads, and the carrier charges the higher number. A 24 by 18 by 18 inch carton holding six pounds of product bills at roughly 56 pounds. Tighter, right-sized packaging is usually the single biggest lever on parcel cost, which is why our calculator shows the dim number before you ship.
The DIM divisor is the number you divide cubic inches by to get dimensional weight. For domestic US shipments, UPS and FedEx both use 139. A larger divisor produces a lower dimensional weight, so negotiated accounts sometimes carry a more favorable divisor. Divide length times width times height in inches by 139 and round up to get the dimensional weight in pounds.
Most carrier parcel services top out around 150 pounds per piece and within set dimension limits. Above that, or once individual boxes start grouping into pallet quantities, the shipment belongs in LTL freight or on a sprinter van, which price by freight class and distance rather than per piece. AFX quotes both sides of that line so you are never stuck overpaying parcel rates on freight-sized volume.
The crossover usually arrives when you are shipping several boxes to the same destination that could stack onto a pallet, or when total weight climbs into the few-hundred-pound range. At that point LTL freight, priced by class, weight, and distance, almost always beats paying per parcel piece. There is no single magic number because dimensional weight and surcharges shift it, so we watch your actual volume and flag the move when the math turns.
These are accessorial fees that stack on top of the base rate when a package is bulky. Additional handling typically triggers when length exceeds 48 inches, or length plus girth exceeds 105 inches, or a single dimension crosses a set limit. The large-package surcharge applies to bigger boxes, often when length plus girth exceeds 130 inches, and it usually forces a minimum billable weight regardless of the scale. Our calculator checks each package against these thresholds before it ships.
Girth is the distance around the thickest part of the box, calculated as two times the width plus two times the height. Length plus girth is the measurement carriers use to flag oversized packages: length plus two times width plus two times height. Crossing 105 inches typically triggers additional handling and crossing 130 inches typically triggers the large-package surcharge, so girth quietly drives a lot of parcel cost.
Parcel networks price by zone, a band that grows with the distance between origin and destination. Zone 2 is regional and cheapest, zone 8 is roughly coast to coast and the most expensive, with ground transit stretching from one day in zone 2 to about five days in zone 8. Shipping from a location closer to your customers, or splitting inventory across regions, lowers both the zone and the transit time on every order.
Yes. Every piece moves with a scannable label and a tracking number, and status updates from pickup to delivery flow into one view in your account so you and your customer can follow each package door to door. If a piece stalls in the network, you have a specialist to call rather than a chatbot to argue with.
Three levers move the needle most. First, right-size the box so you stop paying dimensional weight on empty space. Second, check every package against the surcharge thresholds before shipping so additional-handling and large-package fees do not surprise you. Third, rate-shop across carriers and watch the crossover to LTL, because past a few boxes a pallet is usually cheaper. AFX builds all three into how we quote and book parcel.
