Hotshot explained.
A hotshot rig is a 1-ton or 1.5-ton diesel pickup (typically a F-450, F-550, RAM 5500, or similar) paired with a gooseneck or bumper-pull trailer. Trailers run 30-40 feet long, with payload capacity up to about 16,500 lbs depending on the rig and trailer combination. Hotshot trucks dispatch faster than standard tractor-trailers because they don't require HOS pre-trip from a yard — many drivers operate as owner-operators.

Hotshot — Common Questions
Hotshot uses a heavy-duty pickup and gooseneck trailer instead of a semi. They dispatch faster, run lower deck heights, and are cost-effective for loads under about 16,500 lbs that don't need a full trailer.
Most hotshot rigs cap at 16,500 lbs payload. Loads over that need a Class 8 semi (Dry Van, Flatbed, etc.).
Local-region pickups (within 100 miles of the driver) typically dispatch within 2-4 hours during business hours. Same-day pickups are standard, not exceptional.
On a per-mile basis, hotshot is usually higher than full-truckload because the rig hauls less weight. But for loads under 10,000 lbs that need to move fast, hotshot is often cheaper than paying for a full Dry Van or LTL.
